keski- (“mid-, middle”) +‎ viikko (“week”), a calque either of Middle Low German middewēke, or of a seemingly unattested Old Swedish word (compare Old Norse miðvikudagr (literally “mid-week day”)). Note that Wednesday was the middle of the seven-day week when Sunday was still the first day of the week in Finland prior to 1973.
