From earlier kasangbahay, from the /ŋ/ becoming /m/ before /b/ due to nasal assimilation. By surface analysis, ka- + sam- + bahay (house), literally someone sharing with a single house. Commonly mistaken to be a blend of kasama (companion) + bahay (house).
