  • Contraction of kandililya, from now obsolete Spanish candelilla (bougie; catheter; flexible instrument for exploring and healing the urinary tract, literally little candle), according to Panganiban (1973).
  • Borrowed from Spanish canilla with sound shift from /n/ to /l/, from Latin cannella, diminutive of canna (cane), according to Cuadrado Muñiz (1972). Possible doublet of kanela.
