Etymology

From Proto-Polynesian *kava-pusi (compare with Samoan 'avapuhi plus Hawaiian ʻawapuhi and ʻōpuhi, “shampoo ginger, Zingiber zerumbet”)[1][2] from Proto-Polynesian *kawa (thus doublet of kawa and kawakawa).
