From Proto-Vietic *daː. Cognate with Arem kadɑː. See also cự đà.

Discounting reduplicatives and prefixal words (like cà giựt and bồ nông), this is one of the true disyllabic words in Vietnamese, see thằn lằn, mồ hôi, kì nhông, bồ hóng for some more examples.
