käryāñ

Tocharian B

Etymology

From an unattested singular form *käryā-, from Proto-Tocharian *käryā- (whence also Tocharian A kri (will)), from Proto-Indo-European *kṛd(i)yeh₂-, from *ḱḗr. Cognate with English heart, Old Irish cride, Latin cor, and Lithuanian širdis.

Noun

käryāñ pl

  1. hearts

Usage notes

The usual Tocharian B word for heart is arañce; *käryā- appears to be an archaism attested in only one passage.
