jamiḍḍu

Sicilian

Alternative forms

  • gamiḍḍu
  • camiḍḍu, cammellu (italianization)

Etymology

Possibly a reborrowing from a Semitic adstratum — which retained the voiced velar plosive /ɡ/ as in *gamal- and would eventually explain even the simultaneous presence of /i/ and /ɖɖ/ — ultimately from Vulgar Latin *camellus, from Latin camēlus (camel). Cognate with Italian cammello and Maltese ġemel. Doublet of gamiḍḍu.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /jaˈmiɖ.ɖu/
  • Hyphenation: ja‧mì‧ḍḍu

Noun

jamiḍḍu m (plural jamiḍḍi)

  1. A beast of burden, much used in desert areas, of the genus Camelus.
