island time

English

Noun

island time (uncountable)

  1. (uncountable, sometimes derogatory, slang) A notional system of time which others sometimes derogatorily ascribe to islanders (e.g. Hawaiians or Fijians), and which they sometimes jocularly ascribe to themselves, to account for their supposed tendency to be leisurely, not rigorous about scheduling, and often tardy.
He's operating on island time; I still can't wrap my head around the fact that you hired a Hawaiian guy and expected him to be punctual.
