hvornår
Danish
Etymology
From Old Danish hwænnær, hwannær, from Old Norse hvénær, a compound of 1. Old Norse hvé (“how”), from Proto-Germanic *hwē, and 2. Old Norse nær (“closer”).
An alternative explanation is that is related to (or borrowed from) Middle Low German wannēr (“when”) (cf. Dutch wanneer), which is a compound of 1. Proto-Germanic *hwan (“when”) and 2. Proto-Germanic *airiz (“earlier”). The former part is the same word as English when and German wenn, wann.
