Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /hɔʎ/

Noun

hoill n (definite singular hoillet, indefinite plural hoill, definite plural hoilla)

  1. (dialectal, Trøndelag) flesh
  2. (dialectal, Trøndelag) stitch (pain in the side)

Etymology 2

From Old Norse halda. Compare Swedish hålla. Due to apocope, the final vowel is removed while writing. Due to palatalization, the ending -ld use to be written as -ill(j).

Verb

hoill (present tense hell, past tense hoildt or hoiltj)

  1. (dialectal, Trøndelag, Northern Norway) eye dialect spelling of halde (to hold). (In case of use of "kløyvd infinitiv" it is an e-infinitive verb, because it's got an apocope. The distinction between the two types of verbs in Nynorsk is not used officially after the 2005 spelling-reform)
  2. (dialectal, Trøndelag, Northern Norway) imperative of halde
