From Proto-Philippine *hípun (“small shrimp”).[1] Compare Cebuano hipun (“tiny shrimp”), Mansaka ipon (“small fish”). The “butterface” sense is from people eating the body of the shrimp and treating the head as undesirable by throwing it away.
