From Ancient Greek ἐρμηνευτικός (ermēneutikós, “of or for interpreting”), from ἐρμηνευτής (ermēneutḗs, “an interpreter”), from ἑρμηνεύω (hermēneúō, “translate, interpret”); see hermeneutics.
