Unknown. Probably related to hage (“enclosed pasture”) and hägnad (“fence”). See Old Swedish ohægdhom (“without restraint”), implying the existence of the unattested Old Swedish *hæghþ (“restraint”). See also Old English hegian (“to hedge”).
