hebeo
Latin
Etymology
From a root *heb- relating to bluntness, of which further etymology is unknown;[1] proposed derivations include:
- From a root common to Ancient Greek κωφός (kōphós, “blunt, dull”).
- From Proto-Indo-European *gʰebʰet-, which then leads to an earlier version *xeb- (to differentiate it from a later form *heb- if the shift */x/ > */h/ in the Italic languages already happened during late Proto-Italic). Cognates include Old Armenian խուլ (xul, “deaf”).
Pronunciation
- (Classical) IPA(key): /ˈhe.be.oː/, [ˈhɛbeoː]
- (modern Italianate Ecclesiastical) IPA(key): /ˈe.be.o/, [ˈɛːbeo]
