  1. college (university); university college; an institution of higher education that teaches undergraduates, but that does not in general have the rights to issue graduate degrees, except for in specified fields.

Usage notes

In practice, the term is also retained in some names of universities even after they were given permission to issue graduate degrees. See also the entry högskola in English Wikipedia.
