grýlukerti

Icelandic

Etymology

Likely from Grýla (a folkloric ogress) + kerti (candle). Probably derived from the fact that icicles look a lot like the stalactites found in caves and that since Grýla lives in a cave she would have used them as candles.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈkriːlʏˌcʰɛr̥tɪ/

Noun

grýlukerti n (genitive singular grýlukertis, nominative plural grýlukerti)

  1. icicle
