Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *kīŕ (a kind of box; to hide; mystery)[1] + -lə, whence also Azerbaijani gizli (hidden). The original meaning must have meant “to put in a box or bag, to store”.[2] Cognate with Karakhanid کِزْ (kiz, a sort of box), Turkish gizlemek and Turkmen gīzlemek (to hide), Turkish giz (secret), Dolgan and Yakut кистээ (kistee, to hide). Also cognate with Crimean Tatar gizlemek, which is possibly from Ottoman Turkish كیزلمك (gizlemek).
