Etymology

From Common Turkic *ked- (to put on), Proto-Turkic *ged- (to put on).[1]

Cognate with Turkish giymek, Crimean Tatar kiymek, Uzbek kiymoq, Uyghur كىيمەك (kiymek), Kyrgyz кийүү (kiyüü), Bashkir кейеү (keyew), Tatar кию (kiyu), etc. Possibly cognate with Old Turkic 𐰚𐰓𐰢𐰠𐰏 (kd²ml²g /⁠kedimlig⁠/, decorated horse cloth).[2]
