From Malay gempa bumi, from calque of Sanskrit भूमिकम्प (bhūmikampa, “earthquake”), from भूमि (bhūmi, “earth”) + कम्प (kampa, “quake”), as gempa (“tremor”) + bumi (“earth”). Compare with Hindi भूकंप (bhūkamp, “earthquake”), Marathi भूकंप (bhūkampa, “earthquake”).
