gekokoj

Esperanto

Etymology

From ge- (prefix indicating multiple genders together) + kokoj (chickens, or analyzed as "roosters, cocks").

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ɡeˈkokoj]
  • Rhymes: -okoj
  • Hyphenation: ge‧ko‧koj

Noun

gekokoj (accusative gekokojn)

  1. chickens

Usage notes

The prefix may be considered redundant because kokoj already means "chickens" (of any sex) in current Esperanto. Nevertheless, a difference can be made that kokoj can mean only hens (female) or roosters, cocks (male), but gekokoj always consists of both. However, this difference is not always made.
