Probably from Arabic أَعْماق (ʔaʕmāq, “depths”), plural of عُمْق (ʕumq). Alternatively from the nominalised adjective عَمِيق (ʕamīq, “deep”), or from a blend of them. The forms would have merged phonetically in Maltese. Compare għammieq.
