Inherited from Ottoman Turkish گوتوری[1] or گوتری (götürü),[2] from گوتورمك (götürmek), from Proto-Turkic *kötür- (to lift),[3] from *köt- (to rise, to raise),[4] morphologically götür- + (deverbal nominal suffix). Cognates with Azerbaijani götürə, Uyghur كۆتۈرە (kötüre).
