From Old Frisian famne (“girl”), from Proto-West Germanic *faimnijā, often incorrectly assumed to be borrowed from Latin fēmina (false friend). Cognates include West Frisian faam, Old Saxon fêmia (“young woman”) and Old English fǣmne (“young woman”).
