Etymology

From Old Frisian famne (girl), from Proto-West Germanic *faimnijā, often incorrectly assumed to be borrowed from Latin fēmina (false friend). Cognates include West Frisian faam, Old Saxon fêmia (young woman) and Old English fǣmne (young woman).
