Etymology
From Proto-Celtic *woidīti, from Proto-Indo-European *woydéyeti, causative of *weyd- (“to see”). Cognate with Sanskrit वेदयति (vedayati, “announce”) and Proto-Germanic *waitijaną (“to cause to know, to show”).
