Coined by Provençal writer, poet, lexicographer and founder of Le Félibrige Frédéric Mistral from the popular song "Sèt felibres de la lei" ("Seven felibres of the law"), a deformation of Sefer libre de la lei ("Sefer, book of the law"), from Hebrew ספר תורה (séfer torá, “book of teaching”).
