Recorded since 1656. Borrowed from French euphémisme, English euphemism (both from Ancient Greek) or directly from Ancient Greek εὐφημισμός (euphēmismós), from εὐφημίζω (euphēmízō), from εὔφημος (eúphēmos, “uttering sound of good omen, abstaining from inauspicious words”).
