Etymology 1
The GDLC derive it from Mozarabic 'iškaylûla, diminutive of escalla, from Late Latin scandula (“type of wheat”).[1] (Compare Spanish escanda (“emmer wheat”).) The DCVB derive it from Late Latin ēscāriola (“endive plant”), also the source of Catalan escarola.[2]
