Finnish
Etymology
edus (“representation”) + kunta. Coined by Finnish folklorist and linguist Daniel Europaeus in 1853. The initial component edus is a noun that is no longer used independently to mean "representation" in modern Finnish; it has been replaced by the derivative edustus.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈedusˌkuntɑ/, [ˈe̞dus̠ˌkun̪t̪ɑ̝]
- Rhymes: -untɑ
- Syllabification(key): e‧dus‧kun‧ta
Usage notes
- As the names of institutions in general, eduskunta is always decapitalized in Finnish.
- The parliaments of other countries may always be called parlamentti, but some of them are usually referred to with a term that is derived from their original language, see "synonyms" below.
