Probably from Vulgar Latin *disiūnāre, from disieiūnāre (to break the fast), from Late Latin dis- + iēiūnō (to fast), from Latin ieiūnus. Compare Old French disner (modern dîner); compare also déjeuner, Spanish desayunar.
