Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈdɛj.jaʔ/

Etymology 1

From Arabic ضَيِّق (ḍayyiq). The expected form would be *dajjaq due to the originally emphatic (compare tajjeb). This influence was either levelled out in Maltese or the underlying form was a dissimilated variant dayyiq, ḏayyiq, which exists in several Arabic dialects.

Adjective

dejjaq (feminine singular dejqa, plural dejqin or dojoq, comparative idjaq)

  1. narrow

Etymology 2

From a merger of Arabic ضَيَّقَ (ḍayyaqa) and ضايَقَ (ḍāyaqa), both from etymology 1.

Verb

dejjaq (imperfect jdejjaq, past participle mdejjaq)

  1. to narrow; make something narrow
  2. to bore; to displease; to annoy; to depress
