Etymology

Aquilina identifies it with Bedouin Tunisian Arabic ⁧تقز⁩ (tagz, “similar in age, height, weight, etc.”). Though this seems likely, it does not solve the question of eventual origin. Perhaps from underlying ta’ qies (literally “of measure”), from Arabic ⁧قَيْس⁩ (qays). The Tunisian -z must then be due to assimilation.
