Etymology
Aquilina identifies it with Bedouin Tunisian Arabic تقز (tagz, “similar in age, height, weight, etc.”). Though this seems likely, it does not solve the question of eventual origin. Perhaps from underlying ta’ qies (literally “of measure”), from Arabic قَيْس (qays). The Tunisian -z must then be due to assimilation.
