From Vulgar Latin cottizō or cottidiō (compare Daco-Romanian cuteza, cutez, Venetian scotezàr, Istriot cutisà, Aquileian scuttia, compare also Albanian kuxoj), from Ancient Greek κοττίζω (kottízō, “to play craps, shoot dice”).
