Unknown. Possibly of expressive origin (cf. cotrobăi). Unlikely to be from either Hungarian kötö (“bundled strongly”), Latin captorius, Latin *coactorium (“place where two objects come together”) or from Serbo-Croatian katarište (“flag lance”).
