From Middle English congregacioun + -agh (“suffix forming noun, borrowed from Irish -ach”).

Yola <g> is silent when in <-ngr->, thus the first <g> was replaced by an unetymological <t>. The middle <ga> was syncopated to simplify articulation. This is a vulgar pronunciation in Ireland.
