From a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia, perhaps from Proto-Celtic *krowdi- (“crude, rude, raw > hard, severe”); compare Irish crua.[1][2] From Proto-Indo-European *krewh₂-. Alternatively, from the same origin of con, via a medieval form *cõo.
