From Old Irish clár, from Proto-Celtic *klāros, *klārom (“table”), likely cognate with Ancient Greek κλῆρος (klêros), from Proto-Indo-European *kleh₂- (“to lay out”), from *kelh₂- (“to hit, cut down”).
