Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese celorgião (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from *chirurgianus, a Vulgar Latin derivative of Latin chīrurgia (“surgery”), from chīrurgus (“surgeon”), from Ancient Greek χειρουργία (kheirourgía), from χείρ (kheír, “hand”) + ἔργον (érgon, “work”). Cognate with Portuguese cirurgião.
