Probably from a Vulgar Latin *cytula where ⟨y⟩ was i̯u or also *cyatula after cyathus (“small ladle”) altered from Latin cotyla (“a kind of cup without handles”), from Ancient Greek κοτύλη (kotúlē, “cup, beaker”).
