Etymology

From Old French eschec mat, from Arabic شَاه مَاتَ (šāh māta), from Persian (šâh mât, “the king [is] amazed”), perhaps conflated with Arabic مَاتَ (māta, “to die”). Equivalent to chek +‎ mat.
