Etymology
Of uncertain origin; possibly from nineteenth-century Romani charver (“prostitute”), or Italian chiavare (“to nail, to attach, to fuck”), or from Romani ćhavo (“child”) and/or its derivatives, especially Spanish chava (“girl”), or from Spanish chabacanada (“vulgarity”). (Compare charva.)
