Uncertain. Perhaps from dialectal chaba (“old, scrawny horse”) + -ina. Compare Czech chabý (“weak”), from Proto-Slavic *xabъ. Alternatively borrowed from Ukrainian кабани́на (kabanýna). If so, doublet of kabanina (“pork”).
