Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic чашникъ (čašnikŭ), from Proto-Slavic *čašnikъ, from *čaša (“cup”) + *-nikъ (forms agents). Compare Czech číšník (“waiter”), Polish cześnik (“cupbearer”), Russian чашник (čašnik, “cupbearer”).
