Etymology

From older Sicilian *cacoccia, from Arabic خُرْشُوف (ḵuršūf). Based on the forms *carsoffa (*carsòffula) that gave palatized *carcioffa (carciòffula), then another metathetic *carcoccia (carcòcciula).[1] Compare Spanish alcachofa, Portuguese alcachofra, Catalan carxofa, Italian carciofo.
