Inherited from Vulgar Latin *occāsionāre (possibly later changed into a form *cāssionāre, or *accāsionāre), from Latin occāsiō. Compare Italian cagionare, accagionare, Old French achoisoner (however, these may also be internally derived or formed from nouns descending from occāsiō (cf. Italian cagione, Old French achoison), in which case it is conceivable this Romanian verb may have been derived from a hypothetical noun *cășune which was since lost). Less likely from a Vulgar Latin root *casionāre, from casus (“cause”).
