Probably from the variant form cârnaț, from a Vulgar Latin *carnāceus or *carnācius, ultimately from Latin carnis, carō (“meat”). Compare Megleno-Romanian cărnat, Sicilian carnazzu, Spanish carnaza, carniza, Old Occitan carnaza, Portuguese carnaz.
