From Germanic (Proto-Germanic *brekaną (“to break”)) or Celtic, from Proto-Celtic *brīgos; compare Welsh bri (“power”), Old Irish bríg (“force, power, value”). Not to be confused with Proto-Balto-Slavic *bergtei, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰergʰ-. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *berganą
