bokë

Albanian

Etymology

From the same root of bukël, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰoHu (to grow, swell). Compare Old High German buhil (hill). See also bukur. Alternatively from Serbo-Croatian bok (side, flank), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *bokъ (side). However, Svane casts doubt over the Slavic source, owing to its divergent meaning (the Proto-Slavic term denotes parts of the physique rather than terrain) as well as the final in Albanian, suggesting an inherited source. It is attested among Arbëresh Albanians.[1][2]
