From earlier blēdsian, blœ̄dsian, from Proto-West Germanic *blōdisōn (to sprinkle, mark or hallow with blood), from Proto-Germanic *blōþą (blood), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰleh₃- (to thrive, flourish, bloom). Cognate with Old Norse bletza (to bless), whence Icelandic blessa. Equivalent to blōd + -sian.
