Etymology

Hypothesized to be derived from Latin *pastica, from pastus,[1] but unlikely because of unsolved phonetic difficulties. More likely from *bjershkë, a derivative of bie (to fall) (see pjeshkë < *pjershkë < Latin persica). The term could be the source or related to the oronym Beskidy.[2] At the same time, Orel also claims it is inherited from Proto-Albanian *beškā, contradicting his derivation from Latin pastus.[3]
