bisphosphonate (plural bisphosphonates)
- (organic chemistry) Any of a class of organic compounds having two phosphate groups attached to a single carbon atom.
- (medicine) Any of several pharmaceuticals having this structure; they are inhibitors of bone resorption, used to treat several diseases including Paget's disease and osteoporosis.
Usage notes
Do not confuse a bisphosphonate with a biphosphate, nor a diphosphonate with a diphosphate.
